BRUSSELS (Reuters)– British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will register with a video-conference with EU leaders on Monday, eager to advance in negotiations on a future EU-UK relationship, but officials in Brussels expect no development in the Brexit deadlock.

Britain’s Mail on Sunday reported that Johnson would use the conference to “bang the table”, pressing the 27-nation European Union to aim for a contract by the end of the summertime season and not to make use of the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to drag its feet.

Nonetheless, authorities in Brussels mentioned the afternoon conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the heads of the European Council and European Parliament was a long-scheduled stock-taking workout, not a settlement.

” No one prepares for any development unless Boris Johnson selects to amaze us,” specified one senior official. “This conference was arranged in the withdrawal agreement, so it is happening however no one anticipates much.”

Britain left the EU in January and its relationship with the bloc is now governed by a transition plan that keeps previous rules in place while the 2 sides work out brand-new terms.

London validated recently that it had no objective of extending the shift period beyond the end of this year, a prospect some fear might result in a no-deal Brexit that might intensify the financial damage brought on by the coronavirus crisis.

London and Brussels remain far apart on problems such as fair rivals service warranties and fishing rights.

In talks this month, arbitrators made really little advancement towards an open market pact, nevertheless they granted magnify settlements and the hope is that Monday’s talks with Johnson will start the ball rolling for a brought back political push.

One EU authorities stated the conference would be an opportunity for the bloc’s leaders to tension that the perseverance of their primary Brexit arbitrator, Michel Barnier, on a broad deal that would keep Britain thoroughly aligned with the EU reflected the will of all member states and not his intransigence.

Another stated that in spite of methods to accelerate settlements, substantial development was not likely up until after the summertime when London would “rush to get something done” in the 11th hour, as it did in 2015 to clinch an offer on its withdrawal agreement.
