Brussels– As the EU heads of state lastly decide on a Covid-19 healing strategy, environmental task group Mighty Earth has really needed a revival of the tire & rubber market in line with the European Green Offer.
In a 21 July letter, Mighty Earth CEO Glen Hurowitz called for all post Covid-19 EU bailout and recovery assistance for EU-based tire and rubber and car companies to be conditional to satisfying environmental and human rights requirements.
” Land-grabbing is prevalent in the sector, and we are finding organisation are using the Covid-19 lockdown as a cover to seize and clear land while nobody seems viewing,” his letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen declared.
However, the Mighty Earth CEO did not use any information or proof of involvement by business in the tire, rubber or automobile markets in such practices.
Hurowitz went on to require all EU-based companies that rely on rubber in their products to be legally bound by environmental and human rights conditions when accessing EU healing help.
” Insisting on green conditions is possible: Air France-KLM was needed to halve emissions, cut short-haul flights, and use more sustainable aviation fuel by 2024 to get approved for bailouts,” he said.
However, the Mighty Earth leader stated, few other bailouts to the transportation sector have really set conditions on carbon emissions or logging.
Among its suggestions, Mighty Earth stated all company getting bailout funds need to be committed to attaining net absolutely no carbon neutrality by 2025. In addition, it suggested, all tire, rubber and car organisation must have clear ‘no logging’ and ‘fire-free’ sourcing policies for natural rubber.
In terms of human rights, Mighty Earth asked the EU to authorize bailout support to service that are dedicated to ILO Core Conventions, which include human rights dedications on health & security, freedom of association, gender equity and child labour.
